Island badminton players excel at season-ending Atlantics in Moncton
The 24-member Island contingent at the recent Atlantic badminton championship in Moncton, N.B., returned with an impressive 21-medal haul, including 11 golds. Earning gold were Ruiwen Zhu in under-19 girls singles, Yu Chen in Open B men’s singles, Karla McCallum and Nova Scotia partner Aidan Parks in under-19 mixed doubles, Sam Yuan and Hayden Ford in under-17 boys and girls singles, respectively, Yuan and partner Jinghan Zhang in under-15 mixed doubles, Leon Yuan and Sam Yuan in under-15 boys doubles, Adelle Breau and New Brunswick’s Janea Hogan in under-15 girls doubles, Spencer Gallant in under-15 boys singles and Breau in under-15 girls singles and Leon Yuan and Amy Sun in under-13 mixed doubles. Silvers went to Leon Yuan in under-13 boys singles, Alexis Fougere in under-13 girls singles, Gallant and Nova Scotia partner Veer Kundhi under15 mixed doubles, Cici Huo in under-19 girls singles and Sam Lawther along with Chris Ross of Nova Scotia in Open A mixed doubles.
The bronze medal winners included Jinghan Zhang, competing in her first Atlantic tournament, in under-13 girls singles and Zhang and Sun in under-13 girls doubles, Gallant and Breau in under-15 mixed doubles division, David Pan in under-19 boys singles and Jack Ronahan and Zhu in under-19 mixed doubles. McCallum and Sam Yuan won the under-15 girls and under-15 boys MVP awards. The tournament finished off the 2017-18 season.
