Weekly Prince District RCMP report
EDITOR’S NOTE: A total of 110 occurrences were investigated by Prince District RCMP between May 14 and 20. The following is a list of some of the noteworthy incidents and investigations:
RV fire in Wilmot
On May 14 around 7 p.m., East Prince RCMP attended the scene of a RV trailer on fire in Wilmot Valley. Kensington Fire Department attended but the trailer was completely destroyed. It is suspected that the cause was electrical in nature.
Vehicle fire in Ellerslie
On May 14 around 10 p.m. a vehicle fire was reported to the East Prince RCMP. The driver of a 2012 Kia reported that his vehicle was on fire on the side of the road in Ellerslie. The vehicle had not been working well earlier in the day and had been towed. The owner tried the vehicle again and noticed smoke coming from the engine bonnet. The vehicle was completely destroyed.
RCMP respond to report of gunshots
On May 15 around 10 a.m. East Prince RCMP received a complaint of gunshots heard from a property in Freetown. Members attended and spoke to a 20-year-old male who was firing his 12-gauge shotgun on his land. The male had a valid Possession and Acquisition Licence.
Attempted forced entry
On May 15 around 9:30 p.m. East Prince RCMP received a call from a 25-year-old female in Borden-Carleton stating that a 21-year-old male was trying to push his way into her apartment. Members attended, but the male was gone. He was later located and arrested. He is scheduled to attend court in mid-June.
Star or planet mistaken for a flare
On May 16 around 11:30 p.m., West Prince RCMP received a call from a concerned citizen who reported seeing what he believed to be a flare above the water in the direction of Skinner’s Pond. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre does not believe it was a distress flare. Members attended and could see a reddish-orange light in the said direction. It was determined the light was in fact a star or planet.
No one injured in school bus collision
On May 17 around 3:20 p.m., East Prince RCMP received a report that a vehicle had collided with a school bus carrying children on Route 171 in Central Bedeque. Officers responded and quickly determined that the school bus had stopped to allow children to exit when it was struck from behind by a pickup truck. There were no injuries to any of the 26 children onboard the bus. The operator of the bus and pickup truck were also uninjured. The matter remains under investigation but charges under the Highway Traffic Act are expected to be laid against the operator of the pickup truck.
Checkpoints conducted
On May 19, as part of National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day, members of Prince District RCMP conducted 12 checkpoint operations in various locations, including Lennox Island, Alberton, Tignish, and O’Leary. Over 1,000 vehicles were checked for violations under the Highway Traffic Act. Ten written warnings and two charges were issued to drivers.
Driver suspended
On May 19 around 9 p.m. a member of the West Prince RCMP initiated a street check on a vehicle travelling on Main Street in O’Leary. The 29-yearold male driver had suspended license and a previous conviction for driving while suspended. His vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days and he was issued a charge under the Highway Traffic Act for driving while suspended.
RCMP make arrest in break and enter
On May 20 around 11:20 a.m. a homeowner reported to the East Prince RCMP that he arrived at his vacant residence in Westmoreland, to find an unknown man inside. Police attended the residence and arrested a 37-year-old male for breaking and entering. The individual stated he was interested in taking pictures of uninhabited residences and assumed it was OK to enter. He was issued a no trespass notice by police.
No injuries in two-vehicle collision
On May 20 around 1 p.m. members of the East Prince RCMP were called to the scene of a two-vehicle traffic collision on Route 1 in Borden-Carleton. There were no injuries, however the involved vehicles were blocking traffic temporarily.
