Dogs and their owners came together Sunday afternoon in Summerside to raise funds for the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides and raised $1,328 to train six service dogs to help those with physical and mental disabilities.

Pitter-patter of paws both large and small could be heard strolling along Summerside’s boardwalk at Green’s Shores Park on Sunday afternoon, as dogs and their owners came together to raise funds for the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides.

“The goal is to raise $1,000 to train six different service dogs to help those with physical and mental disabilities,” commented Cleve Rix, the organizer of the annual Summerside event.

The fundraiser is hosted by the St. Eleanors and Summerside Lions clubs. Members from both clubs were on hand to help out. Guide dogs transform the lives of those living with visual, hearing, medical or physical disabilities.

“It costs around $25,000 to train and look after a guide dog, and we receive no government funding so every bit helps,” he added. Guide dogs are provided at no cost to qualified applicants. They help those with disabilities to live safer and more independent lives, and there is a growing demand for these dogs. The walk, which kicked off at 1 p.m., included dog memorabilia for walkers, as well as a barbecue. For more information on the walk visit, www. walkforguidedogs.com.
