PEILCC approves strip show application but bar owner cancels

Despite getting the necessary approval to host a male strippers show, the owner of a Bloomfield bar says he has decided not to go ahead with the show. “Some of the public frowned on it and we just didn’t want to chance losing any of our customers because of it,” said Route 145 Bar and Grill owner, Dwayne Costain. The show had been proposed for the end of June. “We’re not bothering with it; we will respect the ones who didn’t want it,” Costain said. An application to host the event had gone to the P.E.I. Liquor Control Commission for approval. Jamie MacLeod, the commission’s director of Corporate Services, said inspectors went door-to-door in the Bloomfield area to poll residents about the request. “The results indicated the majority had no objection to it, but, my understanding is he has since decided, regardless of the results of the poll, not to proceed with it,” MacLeod reported. Of the 68 respondents, MacLeod said 43 people were in favour of the bar hosting the event. “We had about 63.2 per cent in favour of, or having no objections to, the event.” Twenty-five were opposed and nine offered no opinion. Two opinions were forwarded to the PEILCC by email while the other responses were given to the inspectors. Even when such applications are approved. MacLeod said total nudity is not permitted. MacLeod said it is commission policy that when a licensed establishment in an area where there is no municipal council, requests to hold an event involving exotic or nude entertainment, to poll area residents. He said such requests are rare and when approval is given it is only for the date or dates indicated on the application. A community poll would have to be completed for each subsequent application, he said.
