The Cardigan Clippers’ offence got hot at the right time. The Clippers scored 22 runs in their final two games en route to emerging as champions of a parity-filled Summerside Area Baseball Association peewee AA tournament. The Clippers defeated the Hammonds Plains A’s from Nova Scotia by a score of 9-2 in the championship game at Queen Elizabeth Park’s Very Important Volunteer Field on Sunday afternoon. The Clippers, who entered the playoff round as the No. 3 seed, also pounded out 13 runs in a 13-1 semifinal win over the secondplace Kentville Wildcats on Sunday morning. The fourth-place A’s outscored the first-place Port City Pirates 16-10 in the other semifinal. Port City went 3-0 in the round robin.

Teams tied

However, the playoff picture was far from clear at the end of round-robin play on Saturday night as six teams – Clippers, A’s, Wildcats, Fredericton Royals, Sherwood-Parkdale Knights and Kennebecasis Valley Red Sox – all finished with identical 2-1 records. The tiebreaking formula featuring defensive runs allowed, divided by defensive innings play, with the lowest being the best was implemented. Here are the results of the tiebreaker: Kentville: 13 runs allowed in 21 defensive innings – 0.619. Cardigan: 13 runs allowed in 20 defensive innings – 0.650. Hammonds Plains: 16 runs allowed in 21 defensive innings – 0.762. Fredericton: 18 runs allowed in 21 defensive innings – 0.857. Sherwood-Parkdale: 19 runs allowed in 20 defensive innings – 0.950. Kennebecasis Valley: 28 runs allowed in 19 defensive innings – 1.47. The three-day tournament was sponsored by Dixie Lee Family Restaurant in Summerside.
