Police seeking dog-shooter

A dog from Norway, P.E.I. had to be euthanized after sustaining gunshot wounds on recently. The Lab-mixed breed, about seven years old, said RCMP corporal Mike Lutley. Police have been investigat­ing since the evening of the June 4 incident. On June 14, they issued a news release seeking the public’s assistance from anyone who might have informatio­n related to the shooting. Their report indicates the shooting occurred around 7:45 p.m. Owners heard a shot in their neighbourh­ood and the dog subsequent­ly returned home seriously injured. “We don’t believe it happened far from the house,” Lutley said. The injured dog was rushed to the veterinary clinic in O’Leary and subsequent­ly to the Veterinary College where it had to be utilized because of the extent of its injuries, the officer reported. Marla Somersall, executive director of the P.E.I. Humane Society said her organizati­on is not part of this investigat­ion and suggested such matters involving the use of a firearm on a domestic pet is best left in the hands of police. Somersall and Lutley agreed such incidents are rare. The dog’s owner declined comment about the incident. Lutley said the injuries were to the rear portion of the dog’s body and its hind legs. Police believe the dog was struck with birdshot. Birdshot cartridges, he said, spray many tiny pellets. The officer said investigat­ors are working to narrow down the location of the shooting and are seeking informatio­n from anyone who can assist with their investigat­ion.
