Summerside native presented with Jack Adams Award at ceremony in Las Vegas

- YEKATERINBURG, RUSSIA

Summerside native Gerard (Turk) Gallant of the Vegas Golden Knights has won the Jack Adams Trophy as the NHL’s top coach. Gallant was an obvious choice over Colorado’s Jared Bednar and Boston’s Bruce Cassidy after he masterminded the most spectacular expansion season in recent sports history. The Golden Knights went 51-24-7 and handily won the Pacific Division, before winning 13 post-season games and reaching the Stanley Cup Final in their first playoff campaign. The 54-year-old Gallant was named the Golden Knights’ first coach in April 2017, and the veteran NHL coach provided steady leadership while turning Vegas’ expansion roster into a cohesive, motivated team. Gallant’s players praised his steady, intelligent approach to the post-season, which ended in a five-game loss to the Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals. Gallant previously coached in Columbus and Florida, but his teams had never won a playoff round before Vegas’ remarkable run. Gallant began his coaching career in the 1990s with his hometown Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Junior Hockey League, leading the team to the Royal Bank Cup in 1997 He was a finalist for the 201516 Jack Adams Award while with Florida.

Kylian Mbappe’s first World Cup goal put France into the round of 16. The teenage forward tapped in a ball headed toward goal in the 34th minute to give France a 1-0 victory over Peru on Thursday. At 19 years and 183 days, Mbappe became the youngest scorer in France’s World Cup history. With two wins from two matches in Group C, France is through to the next round with a match to spare while Peru has been eliminated. France coach Didier Deschamps made a pair of tactical adjustments after an underwhelming performance in the team’s opening win over Australia. He put Blaise Matuidi and Olivier Giroud in the starting lineup but kept his same 4-3-2-1 formation with Giroud out front.

SAMARA, Russia - Mile Jedinak’s penalty kick gave Australia a 1-1 draw against Denmark on Thursday and new life at the World Cup. Christian Eriksen scored in the opening minutes for Denmark, which has gone unbeaten in 17 straight international matches. But Jussuf Poulsen’s handball after a video review set up Jedinak’s opportunity in the 38th minute. Eriksen had an assist in the opener, a 1-0 victory over Peru. Denmark has four points in Group C, with the team’s final match against France on Tuesday in Moscow. Following France’s win over Peru, the French secured a spot in the knockout round while Peru was eliminated. Denmark will advance with a win or draw against France, or a loss or draw for Australia in its final match against Peru.
