Woman smoking in car with child and drunken assaults among police investigations
EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a list of some of the noteworthy incidents and investigations undertaken by the Prince District RCMP between July 2 and 8.
Mill River Experience damaged
On July 2, at about 10:30 a.m., West Prince RCMP received a complaint of damage at the Mill River Experience activity centre. The door of the activity centre, which is located in the campground, was broken and entry was gained to the building. Various items were thrown around inside. Witnesses noticed a group of teenagers around the building the previous night. The investigation is continuing.
Window screen damaged
On July 2, at about 9:30 p.m., West Prince RCMP received a call from a resident of Alberton advising that three window screens had been damaged on their residence. Entry to the residence was not gained and there was no other damage.
Fatal motor vehicle collision
On July 3, around 10:30 a.m., East Prince RCMP attended the scene of a single-vehicle collision on Route 111 in Newton. The 60-year-old male driver from Cornwall was deceased.
Woman charged with smoking in car with child
On July 3, at about noon, West Prince RCMP received a complaint of a female seen smoking in her vehicle while a small child was in the back seat. It is illegal to smoke in a vehicle while a person under 19 years of age is present. The driver was charged under Section 4(2) of the Smoke Free Places Act.
Truck and boat trailer stolen
On July 3, at 1:30 p.m., West Prince RCMP received a complaint that a 2005 white Dodge Ram and a boat trailer had been stolen while parked on the South West Road. The truck was later recovered that night in Summerside and the boat trailer was returned to the owner. The matter is still under investigation.
Man charged with assaulting women
On July 3, at about 11 p.m., East Prince RCMP received a call reporting that a 38-year-old female and her 18-year-old daughter were assaulted by a 38-year-old male at a residence in Grand River. The intoxicated male was arrested, lodged and released on conditions. He is scheduled to appear in court in late August.
Woman charged with impaired driving
On July 4, at 2 p.m., West Prince RCMP received a complaint of a possible impaired driver in O’Leary. Members located the subject of the complaint and performed the standardized field sobriety test. The 52-year-old female was subsequently brought to the West Prince Detachment where she provided breath samples over the legal limit. She is scheduled to appear in court in early September.
Man charged with assaulting female
On July 5, at about 9:15 p.m., members of East Prince RCMP were called to the Crystal Beach Campground in New Annan after receiving a complaint of an assault against a 30-year-old female. The complainant advised that an intoxicated 33-year-old male had assaulted her and damaged her property. The male was arrested and lodged at the Prince County Jail to prevent any further disturbance. The investigation is continuing.
Truck speeds past unmarked police vehicle
On July 6, at 10:30 p.m., a member of the West Prince RCMP was on patrol on Route 2 in Harper, en route to Tignish with an unmarked police vehicle, when it was passed by a speeding vehicle. The member noted the vehicle, a pickup truck, pass another vehicle on a solid line. At that time the officer activated the emergency equipment in attempt to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to stop for police. The investigation is continuing.
Vehicle hydroplanes off road
On July 6 at approximately 12:30 p.m., members of West Prince RCMP responded to a singlevehicle traffic collision on Route 12 in West Devon. Upon investigation it was determined that the driver lost control after the vehicle began hydroplaning. The driver was the sole occupant and was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Mailboxes damaged
On July 8 a resident of Greenmount called to report that mailboxes had been damaged in the area. Police attended and it appears as though the damage was done sometime through the night prior, after 8 p.m. Several other similar reports of damage to mailboxes in neighboring communities was also received by the West Prince RCMP and the investigation is continuing.
