Canada wraps up preliminar­y round tonight at world junior tournament

- PRINCE ALBERT, SASK.

Canada has clinched top spot in Pool B at the World Baseball Softball Confederat­ion junior men’s softball world championsh­ip. The host squad used a six-run third inning to defeat New Zealand 8-5 Tuesday in a matchup of undefeated squads. Canada (4-0) had an off day on Wednesday and returns to the diamond tonight at 11 p.m. Atlantic against Hungary (0-4) in its final game of the preliminar­y round at the 13-team tournament. Tignish’s Dawson Sellick played left field Tuesday, going 0-for-4 at the plate and scoring a run. New Zealand scored twice in the bottom of the first and once in the fourth to cut the deficit to 6-3. Canada added single runs in the final two innings and New Zealand responded with two runs in its final at bat. Dallas Kipfer was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for the home side. Pitchers David Watson, Owen Torrie and Riley Manion combined for the victory. Dock resident Jeff Ellsworth is the head coach while Mark Quinn of Cardigan is one of his assistants. The playoffs start Friday, and Canada will play Pool B’s second-place team.
