Glace Bay couple wins trip to P.E.I. through Gay Tourism Association contest

- BY KATHERINE HUNT

While scrolling through Facebook one day, a contest caught the eye of Glace Bay, N.S., native Doug Currie. It was a post by P.E.I. Gay Tourism Association about a “Share Your Pride” weekend getaway contest, where people could like, share, and comment on the post to be entered into a draw to win a $3,000 trip to P.E.I. Currie commented on the post saying he and his husband stayed in P.E.I. last year, and if he won the contest, the two would return for their honeymoon at the end of August. Sure enough, Currie’s name was drawn. When Currie found out he was the lucky one, he was ecstatic, exclaiming “I won.” “I thought he won the $60 million,” said Currie’s husband, Jamie Morgan. It wasn’t the lottery, but it was a huge win in Currie’s books. The prize was a travel package to Charlottetown for three days during P.E.I. Pride Week. It was a total of $3,000 in prizes and included a one-night stay at the Holman Grand Hotel, a twonight stay the Great George Hotel, two tickets for the Club Couture White Party, a free meal at Top of the Park and much more. The association’s social media is run by To the T Media, a media management company with a focus on tourism. Co-owners of To the T Media, Ainsley Kendrick and Dian Miguel, were the masterminds behind the contest. Over 1,000 people from across Canada and the United States entered by liking, sharing, and commenting on the Facebook post. About 100 of the entries included people’s stories about P.E.I. “One thing I noted was just how surprised people were that P.E.I. was so inclusive and there was such a big community here,” said Miguel. “And just the concept of there being an association dedicated to promoting gay travel on an Island this tiny.” One of the goals of the contest was to showcase the P.E.I. Gay Tourism Association. It was also to show that P.E.I. is a welcoming province that LGBTQ2S+ people can go to, which is the goal of the association. “For the queer community, as travellers, it’s always great to know that there’s a place to go where we feel welcomed and not feel awkward or left out of anything,” said Miguel. As for their trip, Currie and Morgan shared a busy three days with all of the attractions and food stops. The food, the scenery, and the people were just a few of the highlight of their Pride filled trip.
