Wilfred Kenneth Ellis and Bethany Lynn Trainor sentenced same day after fight

- BY RYAN ROSS

A man and a woman who weren’t supposed to have any contact were both given jail time recently after fighting with each other on a Charlottetown street. Wilfred Kenneth Ellis, 39, and Bethany Lynn Trainor, 25, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown where they were sentenced. Ellis pleaded guilty to breaching his probation and causing a disturbance by fighting. In a separate appearance the same day, Trainor also pleaded guilty to causing a disturbance by fighting, along with damaging property and being a party to a probation breach by having contact with Ellis. The court heard that on July 14 witnesses reported seeing Ellis and Trainor arguing in the street. Later that day, Trainor smashed a window at a building where she went in search of Ellis, although her lawyer said it was unintentional. Crown attorney Nathan Beck told the court Ellis wasn’t coming outside and slipped out the back door. Trainor followed and the two got into an altercation with witnesses reporting Trainor was the aggressor. Ellis was under a condition that he not have contact with Trainor. Beck said although Trainor was the instigator, Ellis had other options to deal with the situation, like calling the police. Douglas sentenced Ellis to 45 days in jail, minus three days for time served. He will serve that sentence on weekends. Before hearing her sentence, Trainor stood and apologized. “I’m sorry for wasting the court’s time,” she said. Douglas sentenced Trainor to 75 days in jail, which she will serve on weekends. Trainor must also pay $100 in restitution for the broken window.
