Change of plans for Spruce Drive development
The developers of a parcel of land off Spruce Drive in Summerside have decided not to proceed with two high-density residential units but plan to build row-housing instead. The land is currently zoned to allow for a potential addition to an adjacent mobile home park. However, the owners, Clifford, Vanessa and Melissa MacQuaid, recently applied to rezone the two lots to R2 and R4 designations. They plan to build a cul-de-sac, with semi-detached homes on the R2 section, which straddles the road, and had been considering two apartment buildings for the R4 section at the rear of the property. Residents in the area expressed concerns about the development, especially the addition of apartment buildings. However, Clifford MacQuaid informed council during its Tuesday night planning board meeting that he now intends to build lower density row-housing, a total of 12 units, on that rear section. He also said he was fine with the proposed rezoning for that lot being changed to the lower density R3. That zoning would allow the row-houses, but not apartment buildings. Council decided the public should have a chance to have input on this change of plans, so the planning board will bring back the row housing side of the development for another public meeting next month. Meanwhile the semi-detached housing side of the project will move ahead in the approval process and go to council for further discussion.
