McCain grants open for a second round of proposals

- JOURNAL PIONEER STAFF

More than $600,000 from the McCain Foods Adjustment Fund is back up for grabs. McCain set up the fund when its Borden-Carleton plant closed in October 2014. Nine businesses and the municipal government of Borden Carleton were awarded a total of $2 million in grants in May 2017. Several of those projects, however, did not move forward and $618,000 in funding was never dispersed. New proposals for those funds are now being accepted at: http://www.innovationpei.com/mccain. “Supporting economic growth for our Island is a top priority,” Economic Development and Tourism Minister Chris Palmer said. “This fund has helped create good jobs for hard-working Islanders at businesses like MacDougall Steel, Silliker Glass, Treetop Haven, and others. It’s also improved our export capacity, and I have no doubt that it will continue to have positive impacts for Prince Edward Island.” A committee of representatives from Innovation PEI, the community of Borden-Carleton, the Central Development Corporation, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and McCain will evaluate all of the project submissions. “I am looking forward to further investments in the Borden-Carleton area and demonstrating our dedication to the development of rural communities.” Rural Development Minister Pat Murphy said. “It is a positive contribution to the community, our people and our province.” Proposals will be accepted until Sept. 28.
