Free session planned for Saturday morning

- JOURNAL PIONEER STAFF

The Summerside Ringette Association is busy planning for another season. The first item on the 2018-19 calendar is come try ringette event, which allows any females wanting to explore the game to give it a try free of charge. It takes place at Credit Union Place on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Pre-registration is required, and can be done by emailing cometryringette@summersideringette.com, and participants only require a pair of skates, helmet and mittens/ gloves. Registration for the season is scheduled for Credit Union Place on Sept. 8 and 15 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Like all ringette associations across P.E.I., Summerside has seen consistent growth over the past few years, which has made it one of the province’s fastest-growing sports.

Social component

“There is a large social component to the game that really seems to resonate with the girls,” said Francois Caron, the local association’s president. “With the support of the City of Summerside and our local volunteers, it has been satisfying to see our association grow and have teams play in the provincial league at all age levels.” This year, there will be some extra work for the association as Summerside and Charlottetown, in partnership with Ringette P.E.I., will be hosting the national ringette championships in April 2019. This will see the best ringette players in Canada playing at Credit Union Place in Summerside.
