The Holland Hurricanes open the 2018 Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association season at home this weekend. The Hurricanes will host the Saint Mary’s Huskies in a doubleheader on Saturday at Memorial Field. The Hurricanes travel to Wolfville, N.S., on Sunday to play a pair of contests against the Acadia Axemen. Game times both days are 1 and 3:30 p.m. “Starting off the season with a couple of wins is our goal,” said Curtis McGregor, a returning corner infielder for the Hurricanes. “If we keep a winning mentality throughout the season, we will step on the plane to nationals in October, and be focused on having a strong championship.” Logan Gallant a former player and current assistant coach for the ‘Canes, had nothing but praise for his team when asked how he feels about the first game of the season. “We have a good bunch of athletes with lots of new blood,” said Gallant. “The work ethic has been strong and I think we are going to go out, play hard and win a lot of ball games this season.” Ryan Abraham will take to the mound in Saturday’s first game, followed by Tyler Johnston. Sunday the ’Canes will look to Chandler Laporte and Charles MacLellan to keep the Axemen bats at bay. The Hurricanes have won the last four Atlantic conference regular-season titles, finishing last season 14-2 (14-2). They are gearing up for their hunt for a national championship, which will be hosted by the Humber College Hawks in Toronto, Ont., from Oct. 25 to 28.
