Granville Street Liquor Store closed for renovations

Outlets downtown and in Kensington to extend hours during makeover

Prince County residents and visitors looking to buy alcohol will have one less option for the next few weeks. The Granville Street Liquor Store has been shut down for renovations. The doors closed on Sunday, and will not open again to the public for at least five weeks. The store is in a high-traffic retail area in the city and more than a few people walked up to the doors Monday before realizing there was a “closed for renovations” sign in the window. “They could have told me that last time I was in here,” muttered one disgruntled customer as he walked back to his car. Passerby Marjorie Geiss said she had saw a notice about the closure some time ago in a Facebook post by the Liquor Commission, so the closure was no surprise to her. Not that she frequents the store more than occasionally, she said, but she can see how it might be an inconvenience for some customers. “I’m OK with it, but I’m sure there are a lot of people who are put out. “Thank the Lord it’s only five weeks,” she laughed.

The P.E.I. Liquor Control Commission issued a statement about the closure Monday, apologizing for the inconvenience to customers. It said the Summerside Waterfront Mall Liquor Store and Kensington Liquor Store will have extended hours while the renovations are ongoing. The newly renovated Granville Street store will have number of improvements over the previous iteration, said Jamie MacLeod, director of corporate services for the commission. “The newly renovated store will feature an increased selection in products, a sampling station, a buy local section as well as improved and energy efficient lighting which will result in a better shopping environment for our customers,” said MacLeod. Brighton Construction was selected as the general contractor for the renovation work. It was selected through a public tender process.
