The Holland Hurricanes’ soccer teams started their 2018 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) seasons on a high note over the weekend. The Holland College women trimmed the Dal AC Rams 10-0 at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall on Saturday, and pulled out a 1-0 road win over the Crandall Chargers in Moncton, N.B., on Sunday. In men’s action, the Hurricanes posted back-to-back 5-0 wins over the Rams and Chargers. The Hurricanes are back in action on Saturday, when they welcome the MSVU Mystics to Cornwall. The women’s game is at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m. The Hurricanes are also at home on Sunday against the UKC Blue Devils at 2 and 4 p.m.

Women

Against the Rams, the Holland College women opened the scoring just four minutes in on a goal by Laura Wells. Wells, with her second of the game, Kathrine McEwen (2) and Ali Fahie gave the Hurricanes a 5-0 lead at halftime. Jade Stewart (2), Emily Rasmussen, Grace Peardon and Taylor Thorne added second-half markers. The Hurricanes and Chargers played a scoreless first half. MacEwen notched her third goal of the weekend just two minutes into the second half to put the ‘Canes ahead 1-0, which is how the game would end. Holland College keeper Hailey Terstege was perfect all weekend in recording back-to-back shutouts.

Men

Tjeerd Schep scored in the first minute of play, and the Hurricanes never looked back in men’s play Saturday. Shunya Kobayashi added to the Hurricanes’ lead less than 10 minutes later, followed by two goals from Ehab Moustafa. Moustafa showed Holland College fans the future is bright as he scored his third of the game in the 60th minute. Sunday’s match versus Crandall was another hard-fought defensive stalemate in the first half. The Hurricanes would burst the game wide open with five straight goals in the second half. Schep, Harrison Ellison, Alex Lourenso, Alec Iatrou and James Briand scored for the Hurricanes. Brandon Lund had a perfect weekend in goal for the Hurricanes.
