It’s opening night for the Summerside Spartans and Clippers.

Kings County Steelers visit Summerside for opening game

- JOURNAL PIONEER STAFF

The Summerside Waterwise Spartans are taking a play-byplay, game-by-game mentality this season. With the P.E.I. Bantam Tackle Football League moving from eight-man to six-man football, it will be interesting to see how the Spartans match up with the other teams. Some of those answers will be known tonight, when the Spartans host the Kings County Steelers in the regular-season opener for both teams. Start time at Eric Johnston Field is 6 p.m. On the offensive side of the ball, the Spartans will have great speed in the backfield with Kieran Arsenault and Zackary Blood. The Spartans are also looking for big things offensively from first-year quarterback Lucas Doucette, and the coaching staff likes his speed position and arm. The offensive line is raw but talented, with Sean Matheson as the only seasoned veteran, while Evan MacDougall and Carson Biggar are first-year Spartans.

Defence

On the defensive side of the ball, the Spartans have more experience and are looking for big things from leader Aiden Little at middle linebacker, Nathan Enman and Daniel Tamtom on the defensive line and Luke Quinlan at strong safety. The defence will be looking at for two sophomore players, Bradley McCourt and Brayden Pike, to make significant contributions at the defensive-back positions. Almost half of the team is firstyear bantam players, and the coaches will be mixing these players in to give them experience and hoping for some big contributions from them as well. The Spartans’ coaching staff is really excited with the makeup of this team, and is hoping for a good crowd tonight.
