Island seniors recognized for volunteer efforts
Five Island seniors were celebrated for their unwavering commitment to their communities and tireless efforts in improving the lives of others.
On Monday, Tina Mundy, minister responsible for Island seniors, presented five community leaders with a token of appreciation for their work.
The individuals personify the caring and connectedness of the Island, said Mundy.
The five women – Grace Blackette, Evelyn Jenkins, Kaye Larkin, Anne Sherman and Fairley Yeo – were named Senior Islanders of the Year.
“It feels wonderful to be recognized,” said Yeo, a Knutsford resident.
In addition to selflessness, the recipients never imagined being recognized for their work.
“It’s about helping others. I had to read the letter that informed me I was a recipient this year twice because I couldn’t believe it.”
Yeo says volunteering is a rewarding practice.
“You always get more than you give. And you walk away knowing you’re helping others.”
Jenkins, 92, was also a deserving recipient.
“I met Evelyn through church. I was volunteering at the fall fair and so was she. It was a Friday, she had gone home after working the fair and baked a bunch of goodies and then come back with it all,” said Jodi Swan, who attended the award presentation.
“She’s an incredible woman. All of the work she has done sets the bar high for the next generation.”
Jenkins’s daughter, Beth Grant, agreed.
“We’re really proud of her. She’s a wonderful example to the family and community. We like to say she’s a mother to many.”
