This November, the P.E.I Registered Music Teachers’ Association is offering a number of workshops for teachers and students. Canadian composer Christine Donkin, will participate in the events.

Donkin is an award-winning composer whose music is promoted by several publishers, appearing regularly in Royal Conservatory curriculum. Workshops will take place at the Steel Recital Hall on the UPEI campus on Nov. 16 and 17. The first workshop will take place on Friday, Nov. 16 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is $20. It is designed for music teachers and aims to help instructors who encourage their students to compose music. Topics covered include: the inspiration process, composition process and notation process.

The other workshops are designed for students at the elementary and intermediate/advance level. Participants will learn what it is like to be a professional composer with topics including listening, creative activities, giving constructive feedback and working together to compose a piece of music. The elementary session will take place on Nov. 17 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with $10 admission. Following, the intermediate/advance session will take place on the same day from 1:30 to 3 p.m. with $15 admission.
