The Holland Hurricanes will host five other schools on Saturday for the 2018 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) cross-country running championships at the Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park at Brookvale. The Hurricanes are looking to continue to improve and peak at the right time. This was evident at their last meet on Oct. 13, when the Hurricanes’ Hailey Shea reached the podium for the first time this season after a thirdplace finish.

The men’s team also had a strong performance, capturing second place, just three points behind the Mount Allison Mounties. Head coach Andrew Dobson of Summerside is excited to be hosting the championships again this year, and is optimistic of the Hurricanes’ chances.

“Any time you have the opportunity to run a race on the same course you train on all season should play to your advantage,” said Dobson. “As a team we had taken the mentality of trying to improve at every single meet, and to peak where it counts – at the ACAA championships.”

Goals

The Holland College men’s team has its sights set on finishing well this Saturday as echoed by the Hurricanes’ Ryan Francom.

“We need to be mindful of the course, know when to take the hills and be consistent during the race,” added Francom. “It will come down to being positive and putting in a strong effort.” The Hurricanes will be represented in the 24-runner women’s race by Hailey Shea, Isabelle Saunders and Teanna Letkeman. That event will start at noon. Meanwhile, the men’s team of Francom, James Wilmot, Bejamin Nwaogazi-Awuja, Agwell Francois, Chris Lomond and André Boudreau will compete with 28 runners beginning at 1 p.m. The event is free admission, and open to the general public to attend.
