Man escapes blaze in South Freetown unharmed
A stubborn fire at a home in South Freetown Monday night required the attention of firefighters from across eastern Prince County. Kinkora Fire Chief Johnny Dugay said the fire was at a home on the Drummond Road. There was a man at home at the time, but he escaped without injury.
A South Freetown home was destroyed by fire Monday night, but a man inside escaped without harm.
Kinkora Fire Chief Johnny Dugay said the fire was at a property on the Drummond Road. This was a particular stubborn fire to fight, he added, as the home was older and had been insulated with sawdust. “That’s what they used to do in the old days,” he said, regarding the insulation.
Kinkora responded with 26 firefighters and five fire trucks. They also called in tanker trucks from sister stations in BordenCarleton, Crapaud, Kensington and New London.
Dugay said he has fought fires with similar sawdust insulation before but this house in particular proved difficult to extinguish.
Thankfully, he added, the extra carrying capacity from the other fire stations made getting water to the scene a relatively quick process and really helped get the situation under control.
The department was called back to the scene briefly Tuesday morning as what was left of the structure flared up again. It was quickly extinguished again and firefighters continue to monitor the situation.
