Five-set losses

Hurricanes drop matches to UNBSJ

The Holland College Hurricanes volleyball teams each fell in five sets to the UNBSJ Seawolves on Saturday in

Saint John, N.B.

UNBSJ won the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) women’s game

3-2 (23-25, 23-25,

25-12, 25-18, 15-7).

Zayley Murphy led the attack for the Hurricanes with 12 kills with

Abby Hyndman, Brittany States and Lauren Moerike all recording six in the loss.

Laura Ready had 33 assists while Katie Wood had 28 digs. Moerike, Murphy and Taylor Allen each had 10 digs. The loss drops the Hurricanes to 3-2 on the season and into a tie with the Seawolves for third place.

The ’Canes return home to host the Dal AC Rams (1-3) Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

UNBSJ won the men’s game 3-2 (25-22, 17-25, 25-21, 24-26, 15-10).

Brett Butler, of the Hurricanes, recorded a match-high 14 kills with Aaron Pugh adding 10 in the loss.

Nicholas Menzies had 28 assists while Pugh had 12 digs. Marcus Lapointe and Butler each recorded eight digs with Menzies chipping in with seven.

The Hurricanes (1-1) are in third place in the ACAA standings. They return to action on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. when they host the Université de SainteAnne Dragons (0-4) in their home opener.
