Payne scores twice, Mancina stops 42 shots Saturday as UPEI adds to win streak

Beau McCue tied it and Cody Payne won it Saturday as the UPEI Panthers scored twice in the final five minutes to defeat the Saint Mary’s Huskies for their third straight victory.

The fourth-place Panthers improved to 8-5-1 while the secondplac­e Huskies dropped to 11-4-1. Matthew Mancina stopped 42 shots for the win while former Charlottet­own Islander Eric Brassard had 18 saves in the loss. Payne scored a power-play goal in the first period while Kameron Kielly scored with three minutes to play in the second period.

Kielly added two assists, including one on the winner, for a threepoint night and now has 24 points in 14 regular season games this season.

Captain Brent Andrews added two assists while singles went to Doug Blaisdell, Gabe Guertler, Sam Aulie and Riley Whittingha­m. Austyn Hardie, Logan DeNoble and Dawson Theede scored for the Huskies.

UPEI was 1-for-7 on the power play and Saint Mary’s was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 heading to the third.

The Panthers complete the 2018 portion of the schedule on the road this weekend in Nova Scotia. UPEI is at Acadia Friday and Saint Mary’s Saturday for 7 p.m. contests.

UPEI 4, Acadia 1

Payne scored twice to lead the Panthers to a 4-1 victory over the Acadia Axemen Friday in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action.

Kielly had the game-winning goal and an assist for the home side at MacLauchla­n Arena. McCue added a shorthande­d, empty-net goal. Filip Rydstrom had two assists while Troy Lajeunesse, Tanner McCabe, Andrews and goalie Simon Hofley each chipped in one.

Stephen Harper scored unassisted for Acadia.

Hofley made 27 saves for the win while Logan Flodell stopped 24 shots in the loss.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first while the Panthers took a 3-1 lead to the third.

The Axemen were 0-for-5 on the power play while the Panthers were 1-for-4.
