Flyers double Wild to reclaim sole possession of first place

The Moncton Flyers have taken over sole possession of first place in the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League. The Flyers opened the scoring 7:20 into the first period, and never trailed en route to a 4-2 victory over the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild on Saturday night.

The Flyers, who are 20-2-1 (won-lost-overtime losses), hold a two-point lead over the Wild (19-4-1) atop the six-team league. The Wild returns to action on Wednesday, when the Saint John Vitos (12-9-1) make the trip to Credit Union Centre in Kensington for a make-up game. The opening faceoff is set for 8 p.m. At the Superior Propane Centre, Cole Cormier had a goal and an assist while Nicolas Bourque and Patrick LeBlanc each chipped in with a pair of assists to lead the Flyers’ attack. Dominic LeBlanc, Yanic Duplessis and Yannick Bastarache also found the back of the net. Alexis Dube and Alex Cormier added single helpers. Rookie Reid Peardon netted both Wild goals, with assists going to Bennett MacArthur, Keiran Gallant and Ryan Richards.

The Flyers led 2-1 after the first and second periods. Winning goaltender Mathias Savoie stopped 22 of 24 shots. Chad Arsenault had a much busier night in the Wild goal, turning aside 39 of 43 shots. The Wild was assessed 10 minor penalties, five 10-minute misconduct­s and two game misconduct­s while the Flyers were called for six minors and two 10-minute misconduct­s.
