Gallant leads Vipers to win

Playoffs begin this weekend

O’Leary will now face the winner of the semifinal series between the Tyne Valley Tornadoes and Alberton Regals.

The Regals took a 2-1 lead into Game 4 in Alberton on Wednesday night.

At the O’Leary Community Sports Centre, Darcy Tuplin (11), Scott Bernard, Jeff MacIsaac and Nick Reilly rounded out O’Leary’s scoring. Lukas Dyment, Tanner Gallant, Spencer Gallant and Tyson Carragher added assists.

For the Flyers, Matt Kelly (1-1) and Jamie Caissie found the back of the net. D’Arcy LaPierre, Brett Ramsay and Tyler Brown chipped in with helpers.

The Maroons held a pair of three-goal leads – 3-0 and 4-1. Winning goaltender was Chase Dyment. Jordan Arsenault was between the pipes for Wellington.

The Flyers were assessed 12 minor penalties and five 10-minute misconduct­s.

The final game of the 2018-19 Island Junior Hockey League regular season was played at Credit Union Centre in Kensington. The Vipers finished in second place at 25-11-0 (won-lost-overtime losses), and the Maniacs (5-30-1) were fourth in the four-team league.

The league’s two best-of-seven semifinal series will begin this week, with the Maniacs hosting the first-place Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings (30-4-2) in Souris on Friday at 8 p.m., before the teams play back-to-back games at the Evangeline Recreation Centre on Sunday at 2:15 p.m., and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Vipers will host the thirdplace Sherwood-Parkdale Metros (17-16-3) in Game 1 on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Against the Maniacs, Dylan Wheatley (1-1), Riley Smith (1-1) and Jonathan Arsenault also dented the twine for the Vipers.

Ed Jenkins countered for the Maniacs. There was no scoring in the first period, and Kensington led 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Cameron Visser earned the goaltendin­g win over Cam Duffy.
