’Canes win opener

Holland College eliminates host Langara at nationals

One down and two to go for the Holland College Hurricanes men’s basketball in its quest for a national title after a 120-77 win over the host Langara Falcons late Thursday at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n championsh­ip in Langley, B.C.

Langara hung tough for the opening quarter against the No. 1-ranked Hurricanes, which were up five points after one quarter. But a 12-0 run in the second quarter stretched the lead to doubledigi­ts and the ‘Canes never looked back.

All five Holland College starters scored more than 10 points, led by Jordan Holness (24) and Connor Therrien (20). Martin Campbell added 18 points, Roosevelt (Chicken) Whyley had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Jace Colley tallied 10 points.

Travis Adams, who earned the ‘Canes player of the game, came off the bench to score 19 points and grab 12 boards.

Holland College shot nearly 48 per cent from the floor and went 17-for-20 from the free-throw line.

Royce Sargeant, Langara’s player of the game, led the Falcons with 22 points, eight assists and three rebounds. Moeiz Athaya and Drake Downer each had 15 while Tyler Anderson came off the bench to score 14.

The ‘Canes faced the Sheridan Bruins Friday at 11:30 p.m. Atlantic in the second semifinal. The Vanier Cheetahs and the Vancouver Island University Mariners tangle in the other semi at 9:30 p.m.
