SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. - A new housing development in Summerside is rocking the boat.
Dory View is the brain-child of Tara Walker-Malayny and Steven Malayny and is located behind the Royal LePage offices on Water Street East.
Approved back in 2018, the subdivision will be made up of single family homes on narrow lots.
“We’ve been landlords for a long time,” said Walker-Malayny.
"In 30 years, we’ve heard it so many times: ‘Is is a ground floor? Is it an end unit?’”
The homes are 1,300 to 1,500 square feet including the 300 square foot garage. There are nine layouts and each facade will be unique.
Walker-Malayny consulted with a team of decorators to plan the New England beach town colour scheme for each home.
“The plans were well thought out,” she said. “It should not look like a cookie cutter (subdivision).”
Six homes are nearly ready, while six more foundations are set across the street.
The homes are rentals, priced to be competitive with similar sized two-bedroom semi-detached or apartments at $1,500 month and up.
“It’s a long term investment for us, but we think it’s what people want,” said WalkerMalayny.
So far, every unit is spoken for, citing the location, view or proximity to the nearby golf course as reasons.
Walker-Malayny calls the project ambitious, and in these early stages the couple still has their fingers crossed it will all go to plan.
But they’re committed to the idea.
“If we’re going to do it, we’ve got to put in the effort it de- serves,” said Walker-Malayny.
