CRAPAUD – The Pepsi provincial junior curling championships got underway at the Crapaud Community Curling Club on Friday.

A total of four women’s and three men’s entries are competing in the under-21 age category.

Lauren Ferguson, who skipped last year’s provincial champions, opened play with an 11-5 win over Rachel MacLean in a battle of Cornwall Curling Club rinks on Friday morning.

Clara Jack defeated Katie Shaw 13-5 in another all-Cornwall battle while the lone men’s game in the opening draw featured defending-champion Tyler Smith and his Cornwall Curling Club rink top clubmate Mitchell Schut 8-1.

Draws continued Friday afternoon and evening. Saturday’s draws are scheduled for 10 a.m., and 3 p.m., with Sunday’s action taking place at 9 a.m., 2 p.m., and 7 p.m.

The teams will play a modified triple knockout draw and the winning team from each section also gets to compete in the next section. If a team wins all three sections, they will win the event without a championship round.

If a team wins two of the three sections they will advance to the championship game against the winner of the other section.

The team that has won two sections will have to be beaten twice.

Should three different teams each win a section, the team that played in the most section finals will earn a bye to the second championship and they will face the winner of the game between the other two finalists.

The winning teams will represent P.E.I. at the 2020 New Holland Canadian junior men’s and women’s curling championships in Langley, B.C., from Jan. 18 to 26.
