Hurricanes sweep Chargers in Moncton

The Holland Hurricanes’ basketball teams started 2020 off on a strong note against the Crandall University Chargers as Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) regularsea­son play resumed.

The women’s Hurricanes won 80-60 and the Holland College men posted a 91-76 victory.

WOMEN

In the women’s game, the Hurricanes took a 23-15 lead after the first quarter and would extend it to a 36-25 lead at the half over the winless Chargers.

The ‘Canes would continue to build their lead in the third quarter, taking a 63-41 lead heading into the final quarter before securing the 20-point victory.

Courtney Cain-Nordin made an immediate impact in her ‘Canes debut, recording a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Aki Kobayashi had 14 points while Ashley Plaggenhoe­f registered 13 points and five rebounds.

Kassandra Little added 10 points and seven rebounds. Danielle McKinnon came off the bench to score 10 points.

The Hurricanes improved to 5-2 (won-lost) and are tied with the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils for second place. The Chargers remain in eighth place at 0-8.

MEN

In the men’s game, the Hurricanes struggled early and found themselves trailing 24-14 after the first quarter.

A strong second quarter helped the ‘Canes cut the deficit to 37-35 at the half. Holland College surged ahead in the third quarter, taking a 62-53 lead into the final quarter.

Bryce Corless led the way offensivel­y for the Hurricanes with a game-high 27 points. Nathan Anderson added a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds.

Jordan Holness had 14 points and Jayden McMullen added 11 while Adrian Thompson had a strong showing off the bench in his ‘Canes debut with 13 points and three rebounds.

The Hurricanes improved to 5-2 and are tied with the St. Thomas University Tommies for second in the conference standings. The ‘Canes trail the first-place Mount Allison University Mounties by two points and hold a game in-hand.

The fourth-place Chargers dropped to 4-4.
