’Canes sweep the competitio­n Sunday.

Hurricanes bounce back to defeat Mystics

The Holland College Hurricanes earned a weekend split with the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics basketball teams.

After losing the opening games on Saturday, the Hurricanes women won 82-74 and the men completed the Sunday sweep with a 93-82 victory. All four games were played in Charlottet­own.

Here’s a recap of Sunday’s Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (ACAA) contests.

WOMEN

Aki Kobayashi had eight of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Hurricanes to victory on Sunday. She also chipped in seven rebounds, four assists and three steals during the contest.

The home side led 21-17 after the first quarter but trailed 48-40 at the half. Holland College clawed back in the third to tie the game heading to the final 10 minutes.

Courtney Cain-Nordin had 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in the victory while Ashley Plaggenhoe­f had 16 points, seven boards and three dimes. Kassandra Little and Sophie Atkinson led the ’Canes with 13 and 11 rebounds, respective­ly.

Summerside’s Nikki Arsenault, a third-year guard with the Mystics, had a game-high 17 rebounds to go with 16 points, four assists and two steals. Kelsey McGrath also scored 16 in the loss.

Holland College held the advantage in shooting percentage­s from the field (4035) and three-point territory (35-31) while the visitors shot better from the freethrow line (74-65).

The Hurricanes improved to 9-3, two points back of the conference-leading Mystics (10-2). Holland College hits the road this weekend for a game Sunday in Halifax against King’s (8-4) at 2 p.m.

MEN

Jordan Holness had a gamehigh 29 points to pace the Hurricanes to victory and start a new win streak.

Saturday’s loss was the Hurricanes first at home in ACAA play since 2013 – a stretch of 64 straight victories.

Jayden McMullen had 22 points in the win while Nathan Anderson had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Holness added nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. John Alex Vos, a Charlottet­own native in his first year with the Hurricanes, had a career-high 10 rebounds while Adrian Thompson scored 11 points off the bench.

Brody Blakney had 18 points for the Mystics while Liam Mitchell chipped in 15.

The Mystics led 23-20 after the first quarter but the Hurricanes took a 44-37 advantage to the half and were up 66-63 heading to the fourth.

Holland College had better shooting percentage­s from the field (46-40), three-point territory (25-20) and the free-throw line (81-79).

The Hurricanes are in a three-way tie for the conference lead with Mount Allison and St. Thomas with each team sporting a 9-3 record. The Mystics (7-5) are in fourth place.

Holland College are in Halifax Sunday for a 4 p.m. game at King’s (2-10).
