Gallant, Ford win two championsh­ips

Spencer Gallant and Hayden Ford walked away from a recent Badminton P.E.I. senior tournament with two titles each.

Gallant won the men’s doubles and mixed doubles while Ford took home the women’s singles and women’s doubles, with impressive performanc­es from the teenagers.

The event took place at Immanuel Christian School in Charlottet­own.

SINGLES

In very competitiv­e men’s singles play, Daniel Breau won his first championsh­ip title. Breau took a tough semifinal versus Yinxiao

Chen 2-0 (23-21, 21-17) to advance to the final.

In the other half of the draw, Dylan Batchilder took the battle with No. 2 seed, Neil Moore, 2-0 (22-20, 2119) in his opening game and then defeated Gallant 2-1 (2117, 16-21, 21-18).

Some wicked shot-making and endurance highlighte­d the final, with Breau finally defeating Batchilder 2-0 (2118, 23-21). Patrick Walsh was the consolatio­n winner.

In women’s round-robin play, Ford won all three of her matches, with her opponents only scoring a maximum of 12 points in any game. Emma Hughes defeated Adelle Breau 2-0 (21-18, 2113) and Torey MacDonald

2-0 (21-19, 21-17) to come second.

MacDonald defeated Breau 2-0 (21-12, 21-13) for third place.

DOUBLES

In the men’s doubles semifinals, Batchilder/Gallant teamed up to beat Mark Brown/Aaron Leblanc in a gritty performanc­e. Scores were 18-21, 21-15, 21-17.

In the other semifinal, Breau/Patrick Walsh defeated Sam Pan/Qingping Wen, 2118, 21-12. Batchilder/Gallant won the title, 2-0 (21-17, 2117). Yan Wang/Chen Zhonglian won the consolatio­n 2-0 (21-10, 21-17).

In women’s doubles, Ford/ Hughes won both of their matches for the title with wins over Breau/MacDonald and Kimmy Chen/Jingxi Hou. Breau/MacDonald took second.

MIXED DOUBLES

In mixed doubles, Gallant/ Breau easily won their semifinal against Wang/Hou 2-0 (21-7, 21-7). Brown/Hughes prevailed in a tough semifinal against Wen/Chen 2-1 (1621, 21-16, 21-13). The epic final was won by Gallant/ Breau 2-1 (21-15, 15-21, 2112). The consolatio­n winners were Tom Pham/Thi Pham.

UNDER-17

There was a small entry for under-17 events as Tom Pham defeated Mitchell Ford 2-0 (21-15, 21-18) to win the boys singles title.

In girls’ singles, Chen won both of her round-robin matches to win the title.

Thi Tham defeated Chuyue Zhang to come second.
