MHL recognizes MacArthur, MacKinnon

-

SUMMERSIDE – Two Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals’ linemates have been named two of the Gongshow three stars of the month for January in the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL).

Team captain Brodie MacArthur was selected January’s first star while linemate Carson MacKinnon took third-star honours. MacArthur and MacKinnon are both 20-yearold Summerside natives in their final year of eligibility.

MacArthur finished the month leading the league in goals (39) and total points (93), and sat in second place in assists (54). He tallied an incredible 28 points in 10 games in January and is closing in on the all-time MHL scoring record for the regular season. MacArthur became the Caps' all-time scoring leader earlier this season.

Former Halifax Lions/Dairy Queen Blizzard star Duane Saulnier, who played in the late 1980s, currently holds that record of 352 points. MacArthur sits tied for second with former Western Capital Jordan Knox at 342 and the Caps have 10 regular-season games remaining. To top it off, seven of MacArthur’s 10 games in January were multipoint efforts.

The highlight of the month for the son of Rodney and Kim MacArthur was a seven-point night in an 8-2 win over the Edmundston Blizzard at Eastlink Arena on Jan. 16. MacArthur netted a hat trick, including the game-winning goal, and added four assists.

MACKINNON

It’s hard to make much more of an immediate impact than MacKinnon had in his first month with the Capitals.

He signed with his hometown team on Jan. 10 after playing 4 ½ seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and had 10 goals and four assists for 14 points in just six games with the Capitals. The son of John and Mona MacKinnon kicked off his MHL career with a fivepoint night on Jan. 16 against Edmundston, posting a hat trick and two assists while playing on a line with MacArthur and Kallum Muirhead. He tallied another hat trick, including the game-winner, to go along with one assist on Jan. 18 as the Western Capitals topped the Red Wings 8-1.

SECOND STAR

Brock McLeod of the Blizzard was chosen as January’s second star of the month. The 20-yearold from Dartmouth, N.S., had six goals and 15 assists in nine games, putting him third in league scoring at the end of January.

He had the third-most assists in the MHL with 46, as well as the second-most power-play goals (11) and total power-play points (25). Like MacArthur, he was held off the scoresheet just once in January and also had a seven-point game.

NEXT ACTION

The Capitals, who sport a league-best record of 34-6-2 (won-lost-overtime losses), have only one game scheduled for this week. That is Saturday night in Miramichi, N.B., against the Timberwolves (1126-4). The Caps’ next home game is Thursday, Feb. 13, against the Campbellton Tigers (21-13-5) at 7 p.m.
