UPEI student charged with voyeurism

- JIM DAY

An 18-year-old UPEI student has been charged with voyeurism in connection with an incident that occurred in a washroom on the university’s campus.

Charlottetown Police Services' major crime unit charged the male student, who is from Cornwall.

Deputy Chief Brad MacConnell said the incident is alleged to have occurred on Feb. 11 around 8:20 p.m. at Robertson Library in a gender-neutral washroom that has multiple stalls.

MacConnell says a woman using the washroom noticed a man video-taping her with a cellphone.

“It certainly is a serious allegation,’’ he said.

“Any time that someone’s privacy is invaded in those circumstances it is certainly very serious.’’

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on April 9 and he has been ordered to refrain from having any contact with the alleged victim.

The investigation is continuing.

“We are still examining the device that was (allegedly) involved to determine what was captured or not captured,’’ said MacConnell.

A spokeswoman with the university said UPEI cannot comment on the details of the case because it is before the courts.

“In terms of how we respond to situations such as this, UPEI takes the safety and security of our campus community very seriously,’’ she added.

“We always take immediate action when any serious allegation is made and when appropriate, we alert Charlottetown Police Services and co-operate with their investigation.
