Island 4-H members gather for annual awards banquet
Daniel Naddy named P.E.I. 4-H-er of the year
Daniel Naddy was named the Callbeck’s Home Building Centre’s Top 4-H Member of the Year at the P.E.I. Provincial 4-H Council’s recent annual awards banquet.
Naddy, a member of the Millview-Vernon River 4-H Club, has completed all levels of the woodworking, sheep, market animal and beef projects, and serves to better his club and community through active involvement in community service and agriculture awareness activities. He has taken on the role of Junior Leader for the sheep project and is often looked to for advice from his fellow 4-H members.
The annual banquet hosted more than 160 guests, including Premier Dennis King; Bloyce Thompson, Minister of Agriculture and Land, and Peter Bevan-Baker, Leader of the Green Party of P.E.I.
The Elmer Larsen Memorial Member Recognition Award for quiet champions of the 4-H program who do not seek the spotlight but still put 4-H ahead of other activities went to Jack Affleck from Albany Centennial.
OTHER MEMBER AWARDS INCLUDE:
– David and Jean Tingley Livestock member of the year award – Anna Doran, Ellerslie.
– The Charlie Goodwin Top Horse and Pony Member Award – Anna Jesulatis, Albany Centennial.
– The Buddy Loane Memorial Top Beef showperson awrd – Gabrielle Naddy, Millview-Vernon River.
– The Brookville Lime Community Project Awards for contribution to community: 1. Wheatley River 4-H Club; 2. Lot 16; 3. MillviewVernon River; 4. Albany Centennial.
– The Women’s Institute Agriculture Awareness Project award winners: 1. Millview-Vernon River; 2. Wheatley River; 3. Albany Centennial.
Leaders, volunteers and supporters of the 4-H. program were recognized for special achievements and milestones, including, Gwen Thompson, a leader and volunteer with the Brooklynn-Heatherdale 4-H Club for over 40 years who was named Honourary 4-H Member; Dunstaffnage-Marshfield 4-H leader Donna Thompson who received a certificate for 45 years of service and Alex Dixon, key leader for the 4-H Central Region, a certificate for 40 years of service. Donna Thompson and Alex Dixon are both still active with the 4-H program.
A special recognition of Friend of 4-H was awarded to The Island Farmer editor Andy Walker, a familiar face at agricultural events across the province, in recognition of his strong support for the program.
The P.E.I. Women in Agriculture leader recognition award went to Jody Williams or Ellerslie 4-H. She was a founding member of the club in 2011 and is currently overall leader.
M&M Resources were welcomed as Silver Heart Club members in recognition of their contribution to the
Centennial Trust Campaign.
AMBASSADORSHIPS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
Brandon Malone from the Morell and Area 4-H Club was accepted as a 4-H ambassador for the Going Global Exchange Program. He will be travelling to Taiwan this summer and ten hosting his exchange partner at a later date.
Also chosen to represent P.E.I. as 4-H ambassadors this year are: Megan Downe, Cavendish, who will be attending the US National 4-H Conference in Washington, DC; Isabella Acorn, Grand River East, Alecia Gallant, Elmsdale; Ryan Boswell, North River; Isaac Drake, Millview; Avery Nicholson, Cavendish and Chloe Loane, Brooklynn-Heatherdale, who will be attending the 4-H Canada Citizenship Congress, Ottawa; and Jessica Larsen, Albany Centennial; Isabella Acorn and Nicole MacDonald, Grand River East; Avery Nicholson and Chloe Loane, the 4-H Canada National Members Forum in Toronto.
Recipients of the Cavendish Agri Services 4-H scholarships, valued at $1,000 each are: Daniel Naddy and Bethany Visser, MillviewVernon River; Janie Beaton, Freetown-Harmony; Jory Donovan, Summerville and Ella Doucette, Cavendish. Awarded $1,000 scholarships through 4-H P.E.I. were Kaitlyn MacNeill, Cavendish, the P.EI. 4-H Council Scholarship; and Megan Vanderkloet, DunstaffnageMarshfield, the 4-H P.E.I. Alumni Scholarship.
