EFFICIENCY STARTS AT HOME

-

Sustainable living is no longer a thing of the future. We are turning to it now more than ever as climate change is becoming an increasing issue, but there is still more to do.

There are many different ways that we as individuals can adjust our lifestyles to become more efficient, and what better place to start than our homes.

For the many people wondering how they should begin making changes to their homes, it can be confusing as to what improvements to make and how to make them.

The obvious root is solar panels. And yes, solar panels do have many pros, but they can also be quite costly and are not always the most viable option.

So, for those of you out there who are looking to make your home more sustainable as well as cost-effective, I suggest your journey begin at the hardware store.

As recommended by Daryl Hardy, Holland College professor of energy systems engineering technology, a simple tube of caulking and some good weatherstripping is the perfect place to start. Lining your windows, door frames and other spots where air can leak into your home ensures that you are keeping warm air in and cold air out.

Air leaks cause more harm than realized. For instance, it can lead to moisture problems in your home, putting its structure at risk as well as your own health.

Weatherstripping and caulking are just a few of the many little, but effective, things you can do to weatherize your home. With this simple solution, you can begin your part in helping the environment, your health and your wallet.
