Recently retired P.E.I. doctors encouraged to assist during coronavirus pandemic
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of P.E.I. recognizes the need for expedited licensing of qualified physicians given the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
At this time of crisis, interprovincial barriers to physician licensure must not be allowed to stifle the flow of physicians from areas of lesser need to areas of greater need within Canada, says Dr. Matt Kutcher, president of the college.
Moreover, physicians who are recently retired may wish to return to the workforce to assist in times of increased need. Accordingly, the college has implemented policy to facilitate the rapid licensure of physicians in emergency circumstances.
This policy will remain in force for the duration of the current public health emergency and is consistent with current regulatory practices across Canada.
As always, public protection remains the primary mandate of the college.
The college will continue to review each application individually, but standard requirements may be modified, and the usual costs associated with licensing will be waived for an emergency licence.
The college will be reviewing applications made under the emergency policy on a daily basis with a goal of same day licensure.
Extraordinary times require extraordinary solutions. The college is committed to evolving to meet new challenges and will continue to work cooperatively with the Medical Society of P.E.I., Health P.E.I. and the provincial government.
