In 1976, the sum­mer Olympic Games were held in Mon­treal, the first and only time they’ve taken place in Canada. Build­ing everything needed was hugely ex­pen­sive, but Jean Dra­peau, the city’s mayor, as­sured ev­ery­one that the Olympics could no more lose money than a man could have a baby. In fact, the Games went $1 bil­lion over bud­get. It took Mon­treal 30 years to pay off the debt.
