Seventy-five years ago, Canada celebrated the end of the Second World War with joy and relief. The war was a fight to stop forces, especially Nazi Germany, that would have made the world a terrible place. At home and overseas, Canada paid a high price for its part in that fight. More than 45,000 Canadians died, and another 50,000 came back mentally and physically injured. And here at home, while people worked hard in factories and on farms to support the war, racist beliefs fuelled by fear and uncertainty meant that Japanese Canadians were suddenly treated as the enemy. Remembering the war can be complicated, but we must never forget the part our country played when free nations stood together to defeat powers ruled by cruelty and fear. Canadians contributing at home and overseas gave important aid to the Allied victory in the Second World War.
