Pronghorn rugby sevens wrap up inaugural season

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s rugby sevens team finished in a tie for fourth place in the inaugural Canada West women’s rugby sevens series.

The Horns headed to Victoria last weekend for the final stop of the series and capped off the weekend with a 41-0 win over the Fraser Valley Cascades to post a 2-4 record and place fifth on the weekend.

The weekend puts the Pronghorns in a tie for fourth with the UBC Thunderbir­ds in the overall standings with six points each after a 2-4 showing at the first stop in the series, Jan. 21-22 in Edmonton.

The second stop in the series in Vancouver Feb. 4-5 was cancelled due to heavy snow.

The Pronghorns started the weekend with a 21-0 loss to the University of Victoria Vikes, but downed the Cascades 19-7 as Caitlin Sears, Savanna Collison and Omabolaji Olayioye ran for tries for Lethbridge.

The Pronghorns lost their final game Saturday 29-5 to the Alberta Pandas.

Olayioye scored Lethbridge’s try.

Lethbridge started Sunday with a 10-5 loss to the Calgary Dinos.

The Pronghorns lost 34-0 to the UBC Thunderbir­ds, but wrapped up the weekend with the win over the Cascades.

Olayioye struck for three tries for Lethbridge and Jill Tataryn added two.

Hailey Driscoll and Sydney De La Mare added the Pronghorns tries.

The Dinos took first place overall in the series with 18 points, while the Vikes were second with 16.

The Pandas placed third with 14 points.
