Clippers grab top seed

The LCI Clippers girls basketball team clinched varsity title and the numberone seed In South Zone 4A Girls Championsh­ips Saturday afternoon.

The Clippers — now 10-0 — had four players hit double digits as the team downed the Raymond Comets 62-46 during Division A Southern Alberta High School Basketball League action.

Leading LCI with 12 points was Hannah Gibb. Jessica Zarowny added 11 points for the Rams and Catriona Smith and Jocelyn Neilson each chipped in with 10.

Leading the Comets was Dez Jensen with 15 points.

In the other girls Division A game Saturday, the Taber W.R. Myers Rebels downed the Cardston Cougars 84-65.

Millay Johnson paced the Rebels with 24 points, while Kitawna Sparks drained 17.

Natalie Hoyt and Genna Wright added 14 and 13 points, respective­ly, for W.R. Myers.

For the Cougars, Ava Hardy led the way with 17 points. Payden Olsen scored 11 points for Cardston and Erika Smith and Kaitlynn Pierson had 11 each.

In the junior varsity game, the Wildcats won 58-36 as Ashley Pierson, Madison Leishman and Hanna Nunn scored nine points each.

Alex Haller led the Rebels with nine points.

In girls Division B action Saturday, the Catholic Central Cougars defeated the Magrath Pandas 51-46.

Leading Catholic Central was Maitlynn Miller with 19 points, while Nikki Stahl had 13.

Lauren Payne had 14 points for the Pandas.

Magrath won the junior varsity game 7850 as Hannah Barfuss scored 15 points and Montana Berezay had 13.

Madi Cook added 11 points for the Pandas.

Skyla Sloan led the Cougars with 21 points.

In boys play Saturday night, the LCI Rams downed the Winston Churchill Bulldogs 87-55 at Winston Churchill as Cole Forsyth led LCI with 18 points. John Evans added 15 points and Tanner McLachlan had 14. Lucas KnitelAlth­en also reached double digits for the Rams with 10 points.

Noah Greenwood and Bertram Dorian led the Bulldogs with 10 points each.

In Raymond, the Comets defeated the Magrath Zeniths 10388 as Chase Bohne scored 34 points for the Comets, Boomer Heggie had 26 and Brock Dewsbery netted 20.

Aaron Fromm chipped in with 12 points for Raymond.

For the Zeniths, Taylor Cook led the way with 27 points. Paycen Blackmore and Brady Tollestrup contribute­d with 22 and 17 points, respective­ly.

In girls play Friday night, Catholic Central downed the Chinook Coyotes 6751 at Chinook.

Miller paced the Cougars with 19 points and Gracie Boser added 15. Ashley Sazalski chipped in with 11 for Catholic Central.

For the Coyotes, Charlize Baron had 12 points and Beth Lamb added 11.

The Cougars won the junior varsity game 7139 as Alissa Crawford led Catholic Central with 16 points. Ashley Sazalski hit for 11 points for the Cougars and Jankowiak Khloe and Madeline Vanden Elzen chipped in with 10.

Audrey Carter led the Coyotes with 14 points.

In Raymond, the Comets beat the Rebels 78-69 as Dez Jensen led the way with 28 points and Teyah Weir added 17.

Kitawna Sparks led Taber with 21 points and Johnson had 18. Wright hit for 11 points for W.R. Myers.

In boys play Friday, the Zeniths downed the Bulldogs 76-48 as Cook hit for 21 points, Blackmore had 14 and Tollestrup had 10.

Greenwood and Caleb Kadijk had 10 points each for the Bulldogs.

The Zeniths won the junior varsity game 6357, led by Corbin Russell’s 18-point outing. Taylor Harker added 13 points for Magrath and John Jones hit for 10.

There were two other games taking place Saturday night, both in Medicine Hat.

In boys action, the Cardston Cougars were taking on the Mohawks, while in girls play, the Coyotes were facing the Kwahommies.

Scores were unavailabl­e at press time.

Last week, the Cardston Wildcats clinched the junior varsity title.

The regular seasons end next March 4. The boys junior varsity regular season title and boys varsity league titles are still up for grabs.

The junior varsity playoffs and Varsity South Zone Championsh­ips take place March 6-11.
