JV tourneys tip off

Top-seeded Cardston Wildcats mauled No. 8 Medicine Hat Mohawks 106-52 to open the Southern Alberta 4A Boys Junior Varsity Basketball League postseason tournament on Monday.

Mitch Olsen led the Wildcats with 25 points while Taylor Barfuss and Dennon Jensen added 19 and 15 points respective­ly. Jaxon May replied with 12 points for the Hat.

Second seed LCI Rams downed Chinook Coyotes 98-54 as Parks Hirsche scored 28 points and Will Boehme and Zach Jacobs added 15, followed by Zach Jacobs and Isaiah Bagnah with 12 apiece.

Liam Doyle replied with 19 points for the Coyotes and Haroon Ahmed added 13.

In other action, No. 3 Raymond Comets outlasted No. 6 Winston Churchill Bulldogs 98-86 as Parker Graves hit for 27 points and Tanner Salmon and Eastin Oler added 18 and 14 respective­ly.

Connor Hellofs replied with 36 points for Churchill while Rueben Roth added 26.

Magrath Zeniths, the No. 4 seed, defeated No. 5 Catholic Central Cougars 76-53 as Austin Wocknitz hit for 25 points and John Jones added 13. CCH replied with 13 points from Shae Gibb and 11 apiece from Drew Kopp and CJ Hirsche.

Semifinals are set for tonight with Raymond at LCI at 7 p.m. and Magrath at Cardston at 8 p.m.

In girls’ play, No. 1 Cardston upended No. 8 Chinook Coyotes 72-30 as Madison Leishman scored 14 points, followed by Morgan Gibb with 13, Melissa Carter with 12 and Brianna Breaker-Fox with 11. Payton Viney topped Chinook with nine points.

In other action. No. 2 Magrath defeated No. 7 Medicine Hat 67-52 as Jenna Taylor scored 17 points and Ellie Wilde added 11. Savannah Zee scored 21 points in a losing cause.

Catholic Central Cougars, seeded No. 6, upset No. 3 LCI Clippers 84-70 as Skyla Sloan dropped in 26 points, Chloe Bevans scored 17 and Ashley Sazalski added 12. Abbie Hall led the Clippers with 23 points while Krista Nelson and Avery Edwards scored 14 apiece.

In the other contest, No. 5 upset No. 4 Taber W.R. Myers 59-54. No scorers were available.

In semifinal action tonight, CCH plays at Magrath at 7 p.m. while Raymond travels to Cardston at 6 p.m.
