The weather may scream winter, but Lethbridge residents will be dreaming of spring when the Home and Garden Show begins in two weeks.

The 41st annual show, presented by Exhibition Park and the local Canadian Homebuilders Association, continues to be a popular “one-stop shop” to find renovation, design and do-ityourself ideas for the home, yard and garden.

This year’s event runs March 22 to March 24, from 1-8 p.m. and March 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We’re pretty excited. There’s a lot of new events happening in addition to the 300 exhibitors that are packing the halls in all the pavilions, too,” said Doug Kryzanowski, Exhibition Park’s marketing manager. Currently there is a waiting list for exhibitors as well.

The show guide will be mailed out to residents next week, he said.

“Lethbridge is looked at as a leader in Alberta and across the country as far as design, innovation and energy efficiency,” said Angela Zuba, CEO of the Canadian Homebuilders Association. “We work with all kinds of trades, buyers, developers, the City, Exhibition Park, and we’re all working together to build the community. A lot of our members partake in the show and we want to showcase the high level of product and services we can deliver.”

Continuing for its sixth year is the BDO 5 Star Exhibitor Awards. Also returning is the Atco Gas Carefree Kitchen Theatre Cooking Demo, where visitors can learn how to make an oven-baked blooming onion.

There are a couple additions to this year’s lineup, including activities planned inside Heritage Hall. Part of the space will be transformed into an “indoor patio oasis” by BURNCO where visitors can relax and purchase snacks or a beverage during the show.

“A few months ago we were thinking the Home and Garden show is really great, but your feet get tired, there’s not a lot of spaces to sit down, and we wanted to bring that warm ambiance of spring and a patio,” said Zuba.

While hanging out in Heritage Hall, visitors can vote for their favourite design in the BURNCO Landscaper Challenge. Four top landscapers — Landscapers Earthlings Inc., Hedgecore Landscaping, DT Renovations, and Country Landscapes — will be challenged to use common and economical products to design a creative and functional small backyard landscape. The winner will then receive a “People’s Choice” plaque.

“We wanted to bring the public something they could do in their own backyard. Something that was smaller and more affordable, so that’s what this challenge is,” said Zuba.

The Lethbridge & District Horticultural Society and Ferguson Paint will host daily presentations in Heritage Hall about gardening practices and painting techniques.

On March 25 from 1-4 p.m., the first 100 kids can plant seeds and learn about growing their own garden with the Lethbridge & District Horticultural Society.

Visitors can also enter to win a $500 gift certificate from the booth of their choice, or one of 10 Tim Hortons Gift cards.

Admission is $7 per person, with $5 parking per vehicle. Children under 10 are free.
