Zeniths upset top seed Cougars in OT

MAGRATH, RAYMOND TO MEET IN 4A BOYS FINAL

A wild overtime win has put the Magrath Zeniths into the gold medal game following Day 2 action of the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League 4A South Zone boys playdowns at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

And in the first boys semifinal in front of a loud gym, the number four Zeniths defeated the top-ranked Cardston Cougars 104-91 in overtime.

The Zeniths will now face the No. 2 seed Raymond Comets in the gold medal game Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the 1st Choice Saving Centre.

Comets defeated the Medicine Hat Mohawks 108-103 in the late game.

Leading Magrath in the adrenaline-induced final was Parker Clifton with 25 points, while Brady Tollestrup added 19. Paycen Blackmore (18 points), Sam Payne (16), Taylor Cook (12) and Mason Stock (10) also put up double figures for Magrath.

For the Cougars, Kole Neilson led the way with 26 points and teammate Max Russell wasn’t far behind with 25 points.

Ty Lewis added 17 points for Cardston and Austin Merrill had 13.

On the girls side, the gold medal game for Saturday is set as the first-ranke LCI Clippers will take on the second-ranked Raymond Comets.

Aimee Kondor added 14 points for Vauxhall.

For Kainai, Jaidii DelaneyRus­sell led the way with 15 points and Maggie Russell-Mountain Horse chipped in with 11.

(1) Immanuel Christian 92 (8) Taber St. Mary’s 21

Britney Vande Munt had a 42point evening for top-ranked Immanuel Christian in the win, while Juliana Middel had 12 points and Brittany Veldman added 10.

For St. Mary’s Emily Ginther and Brittney Bartosek each scored six points.

2A Boys (1) Claresholm Willow Creek 91 (8) Crowsnest Consolidat­ed 56

A pair of players from Willow Creek surpassed the 20-point mark as Nic Harder had 27 points and Jean Pierre Otero Rodriguez scored 24.

Jarrid Baxter put up 14 points in the win for Claresholm.

Connor Gunn led Crowsnest Consolidat­ed with 17 points and Colton Miskulin put up 14.

In the late 2A boys game, number-four Coaldale Kate Andrews and Kainai were still playing at press time.
