Council to hear Galt Garden proposals
LETHBRIDGE SPORT COUNCIL TO SEEK SUPPORT IN BID TO HOST 2022 CAN-AM POLICE-FIRE GAMES
Galt Gardens Park, situated within downtown Lethbridge, is home to many community festivals and gatherings throughout the year.
It’s the oldest park in the city, established in the late 1800s. Today it showcases Rotary Plaza, a concert pergola, a popular spray fountain and an abundance of trees and flower gardens.
A Master Plan has been prepared for reconstruction of the Park, which will be presented to Lethbridge City Council today.
Four design concepts, along with a preferred design concept, will be presented, with cost estimates should the project be considered for funding in the upcoming Capital Improvement Program. The construction would be completed in three phases at a total cost of $5.175 million, if approved.
Also on the agenda, the Lethbridge Sport Council will be making a bid to host the 2022 CanAm Police-Fire Games in Lethbridge. The seven-day event would be held in July 2022, if the bid is successful, and host an estimated 750 participants, plus spectators.
The family-oriented Games invite law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other protective services personnel, as well as their spouses, to participate in 22 sports including archery, triathlon, pistol, and submissive grappling.
The 2022 Games Bid Committee is seeking a total investment of $150,000-$200,000 from the Major Community Event Grant to assist the bid process and host the event, if successful.
A west Lethbridge resident will also come before council to request a refund in property tax overpayments over 17 years that he claims are due to an incorrect square footage number entered into the system.
Mayor Chris Spearman will also provide council members a detailed look at the City of Lethbridge Mission to Asia, which took place Feb. 12-25.
A public hearing is also planned for a proposed land-use bylaw amendment in Copperwood Stage 2 Phases 25/26.
The regular meeting, open to all, begins at 1:30 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall. The public hearing begins at 4 p.m.
