Horns rugby off to nationals
The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s rugby sevens team is heading west this weekend.
The Horns are off to Langford, B.C., for the National University Sevens Championships Friday and Saturday.
The team heads into the weekend coming off a fourthplace finish at the inaugural Canada West Women’s Rugby Sevens Series.
In Langford, the women’s side is made up of three pools of four teams with the Pronghorns in pool B with the McMaster Marauders, Waterloo Warriors and the Alberta Pandas.
The Pronghorns start opening day against the the Warriors at 12:06 p.m., followed by a game versus their provincial rival Pandas. A match up with the Marauders at 4:44 p.m. will wrap up Day 1 action for Lethbridge.
Top two teams in each pool plus the two best third-place teams advance to the quarter-finals on Saturday. The remaining teams will play in the consolation side. Medal round games start at 9 a.m.
Last year, the Pronghorns rebounded from a tough first day to win the Bowl round (consolation side) with wins over Humber College and University of Toronto.
The Pronghorns best finish at the National University Sevens Championships was during their first trip to the tournament in 2014, losing 24-7 to the Marauders in the championship game.
