First-year student earns Reeb internship
A first-year Digital Communications and Media student at Lethbridge College has earned a Troy Reeb internship.
Local resident Stephanie Savage was announced as this year’s recipient of the internship earlier this week. Savage will spend 10 days experiencing broadcast news and journalism at some of the top newsrooms in the country.
“To have this opportunity is really cool,” she said on Wednesday. “Generally it’s second-years who get the opportunity.”
“(Savage’s) commitment to in-depth research and strong sense of storytelling make her an ideal candidate for this opportunity,” Reeb stated in a news release. “We look forward to welcoming her to Toronto and Ottawa later this spring.”
The all-expenses-paid internship will provide Savage an opportunity to spend time with the team behind Globalnews.ca, as well as with roundthe-clock news teams at Global Toronto and News-Talk Radio AM640.
She’ll also have the opportunity to intern with Global’s national morning show before moving onto Parliament Hill and the Ottawa bureau of Global National.
“It gives me an idea of what the industry is, what it’s doing, where it’s going, and how things are changing,” she said. “It will give me sort of a platform that should boost my second year.”
Savage said her primary interest is in online writing and longform journalism.
“I definitely am excited about the opportunity to visit Parliament Hill,” she said. “I’m kind of a political nerd, so I like the idea that I can be involved in whatever happens there. Just learning how that side of politics work.”
Savage was a singer for a number of years and has experienced journalism as an interview subject. It was that experience that drew her to the industry.
“I saw what they did, and I really liked what I saw,” she said. “You kind of get to live through moments without actually having moments. You get to tell people’s stories without experiencing it, in a weird way. I like that. And I like the idea that I can tell the stories of people that don’t necessarily have their stories told.”
Savage is the 12th Lethbridge College student to take advantage of the internship.
Past winners include Katelyn Guignard, who now works at Global Lethbridge, Taylor Oseen, who works in Red Deer for CTV Edmonton, and Quinn Ohler, who works at Global Edmonton.
Reeb is a 1988 Broadcast Journalism alumnus and 2003 Distinguished Alumni recipient. He is Corus Entertainment’s senior vice-president, News Radio and Station Operations.
