Leadership race a call to action for pro-lifers

LETTERS

-

The results of a recent Lethbridge survey by the Citizen Society Research Lab indicate that the majority of church-goers agree with abortion.

Even though we know that statistics can be manipulated, this should still be a call to action. It raises the question of what it means to be ”pro-life.” Does it go beyond words or ideas? Does it spill over into any type of action? If it doesn’t, are you really pro-life? If I refer to myself as a “reader” but never crack open a book, am I really a reader? Words are meaningless when they have no supporting evidence!

While there are many ways to be active in the pro-life cause, the crucial one right now is voting pro-life. The Conservative Party of Canada is holding its leadership race, and the results will determine the voice of pro-life people in government. If someone like Kevin O’Leary is chosen, the pro-life voice will be muted. He stated that the abortion debate is over and that Canadians must get used to that fact. But there is hope for the pro-life movement with candidates like Brad Trost, Andrew Scheer and Pierre Lemieux. The question that remains is whether people in Canada who identify as pro-life will act to ensure one of these men win the race.

I realize there are many important issues in any election, but there must be a top issue for each of us. Unfortunately, abortion is often relegated to the back of our minds because it is invisible. The ugliness has been masked by its proponents with euphemisms and attempts to ban images of its horror. However, what if we wielded the power to make an immediate decision to choose to do only one of the following: prevent a tax hike, lower unemployment or save a baby’s life?

I truly believe people who identify as pro-life would then choose to save that baby! This perspective helps us prioritize election issues. After all, if life has no real value, then the other topics are meaningless as well. This is a call to all pro-lifers to take action and buy a membership to the Conservative Party. Passive pro-lifers will, in effect, prove the sad statistic of the CSRL to be true. Prioritize the issues, and vote for a leader who will save lives!
