Go Girl! workshop empowers youth
EVENT FILLED QUICKLY
On Saturday around 100 young girls gathered at Lethbridge College for the Go Girl! event.
The event was hosted by the Be Fit for Life Centre and aimed to help build self-esteem, develop resiliency and empower girls between the ages of eight to 12.
“That’s when girls usually drop out of physical activity, so it’s all about introducing them to different ways to get active and move and steering away from those streamline sports,” said project coordinator Tiffany Wideen. “The day is also about selfconfidence, body image and how they can be a more confident them.”
The event kicked off at 9 a.m. with an opening keynote and then students attended four workshops of their choice before wrapping up at 4 p.m. following the closing keynote.
“The opening keynote talked about the power of individuality and our closing keynote is talking about authenticity,” said Wideen.
Some of the activities that took place were Zumba, rugby, dance, photography, yoga and more.
Wideen noted that despite the lack of advertisement, the registration for the workshop reached capacity within 12 hours.
“Going into your teen years and preteen years is tough for most kids, especially females.
“There’s a lot of pressure, bullying is huge in all kids,” said Wideen.
“It’s so important to just know that whoever you are — be proud of that person.”
