Area high school students nail down honours for cabinet work

- Tijana Martin LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Fifteen students showed off just how quickly they could build a fully functional cabinet on Thursday, as part of the 2017 Southern Alberta High School Cabinet Making Competition.

The event was hosted by Catholic Central High School and took place at the wood shop at St. Francis Junior High. All materials required were included and students were given six hours to complete the project before taking their creations home.

“In a timed event like this, as a teacher you feel pretty proud to see your kids kind of elevate their abilities, even with the added stresses of the timeline and the competition, so it's really cool to see how resilient they are really and the quality work they're putting out in such a short time,” said host and organizer Devin Mulder.

“The high school students who are currently doing this project are those that are kind of upper end of the programs that are offered in southern Alberta. They display a true passion for woodworking and cabinet making.”

Mulder described the competition as a friendly environment.

“Students are working together, they are competing against each other, but the judges are also helping them out and talking about little discrepancies in the project plan, so they're learning along the way as well.”

The cabinets were judged by a panel of industry professionals and the top five competitors walked away with prizes.

Donovan Groves and Peter Harris of CCH were first and second, respectively, and Matt Jackson of Magrath High School was awarded third place.
